Semi-Marathon de Porto
The Porto Half Marathon 🇵🇹, officially known as the Hyundai Meia Porto Half Marathon, has been a must-attend race in the North of Portugal for 17 years. The 2023 edition saw over 10,000 runners 🏃 participating in two events: the 21.095 km half marathon and a 5 km mini marathon.
Since 2007, the half marathon has taken place in mid-September, offering excellent conditions for runners. Along with a mostly flat and easy course, temperatures typically range from 13°C to 18°C, with little chance of rain 🌤️. The route starts near the Arrábida Bridge and features an out-and-back format. It takes runners past various viewpoints and famous tourist spots while running alongside the Douro River.
The race is renowned for its fantastic atmosphere. Locals line the streets to cheer on the runners, creating a warm and festive vibe. Although Porto is one of Europe's oldest cities, the half marathon significantly boosts local tourism 🗺️. The route doesn't go through the city center, leaving it for you to explore on your own post-race or over the weekend.
After the race, relax in the Crystal Palace Gardens — a perfect spot to unwind after your effort 💨. The warm hospitality of the locals will invite you to step into their establishments. Why not treat yourself to a traditional Portuguese dish, the francesinha 🥪? This hearty sandwich includes two slices of grilled bread with steak, smoked sausage, fresh sausage, and cheese in between. Delicious! To top off your day, enjoy a traditional music concert featuring fado and savor a glass of port wine 🍷 (drink responsibly) in one of the city's many wine cellars.
