Marathon de Lisbonne
Welcome to Lisbon! We're excited to see you in October 2024, in the Portuguese capital 🇵🇹, for one of the most beautiful and renowned marathons: the Lisbon Marathon (also known as EDP Lisbon Marathon 🌞). Around 20,000 people 😲 gather each year for this autumn race 🍂, considered a flagship event of the IAAF during this season 🍁. You'll be in the company of runners from all around the globe 🌎 across 3 race formats: a marathon, a half-marathon, and a mini-marathon of 8.5 km finishing at the famous Commerce Square, under the arch of the Palace, for a unique finish in the city center 🏁.
The event is highly sought-after and coveted by runners, so don't wait to register for the next edition 🗓️. The course features paved roads, with very little elevation 😮💨, starting from Cascais, for the marathon. The 42 km run is along the seaside 🌊 and the Tagus River by the Lisbon coast 🌁. You can watch the sunrise over the shore ☀️. The landscapes are exceptional! Quaint little houses line the course and accompany you all the way to the city 🏠.
As for the atmosphere, the 2023 edition was memorable! 🔥 The first 30 kilometers were filled with supporters 📣. To top it all off, the course took a small detour to the beach 🏝️, where dozens of volunteers waved large flags to represent the many participating countries! 🤩 You can only imagine how the temperature soared at the Commerce Square finish line, shared with the half-marathon. Speaking of temperature, don't forget a good cap 🧢, because it's not just the supporters that are hot... The weather is too! Interestingly, in Portugal, in October, it can get quite warm! 👊 Fortunately, there are cool stations set up along the route to help you cool down! 💦
The Portuguese capital is full of monuments and sights worth seeing once the race is over 🏛️. The city is dotted with many beautiful religious buildings and medieval fortifications, like the Belém Tower. You can also relax on one of the many beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean: after exertion comes relaxation 💝. Take full advantage of the city's affordable restaurants! And don't forget to try the delicious Portuguese specialties 🥧, like bacalhau or the famous pastel de nata.
So, are you ready for a welcome pasta party 🍝? But don't eat too much! 😜
Welcome to the rather unique course of the fantastic Lisbon Marathon! 😍
As you already know, the race doesn't start in Lisbon, but in Cascais! From there, you will head out for 6 km towards the west coast of Portugal. Once you reach the Atlantic coast 🌊, it's time to make your way to Lisbon. No worries! We too initially thought the terrain was tough with high elevations 📈. But, the organizers have planned a course with low altitude 👏. Actually, it's the first 25 km that are going to be the most challenging. Expect some small climbs and descents.
However, the end is quite smooth 💨. Still, the heat tends to take over as the main challenge 🔥, so don't forget to stay hydrated! 🥤 Refreshment stations will be placed every 5 km until the 15th km. From there on, the heat will make the race extremely intense. Hence, you'll find water points every 2.5 km. Luckily, the atmosphere is always great for the first 30 km 🎉. It gets a bit quieter from km 33 to km 40, where you can focus on your run 💭.
The entire course is along the coast 🌅, which is absolutely beautiful! But between us, the moment we love most is arriving in Lisbon 🤫. You'll enter the Belém district, with an amazing view of the Tagus River, flowing into the ocean 🌊. From there, you have one last effort through the city center. So, it's the perfect time to give your all until the finish line 🏁. The final atmosphere is magical 🧙♂️: with the support crews, locals, and tourists, there will be plenty of great people to cheer you on during your last meters! 🍾
See you at the Lisbon Marathon! 🇵🇹
