Join the Run in Porto District

Welcome to the district of Porto, often referred to as the capital of the north of Portugal 🇵🇹. This sunny region, which gave the country its name, is renowned for its rich heritage and diverse landscapes. With over 1.8 million residents, it is one of the most populous districts in Portugal. Let's explore together its cultural treasures, iconic landmarks, and the best road and trail races.👟

Porto is much more than just a city where you sip wine on a terrace overlooking the Douro. It's a natural playground for all who love to run, sweat, and push their limits... all within a postcard-perfect setting. Here, between cobbled streets, towering cliffs, and endless vineyards, every step feels like an adventure!

If you're ready to challenge your legs, Porto is your new favorite running ground. Start leisurely along the docks of the Ribeira district to warm up by the Douro, before tackling the serious stuff: a climb up to the Clérigos Tower or a sprint up the Escada dos Guindais steps (there’s also a funicular for those less brave). Prefer to run with the wind in your hair? Head over to Matosinhos for a jog along the Atlantic Ocean. Between the sea breeze and the cries of seagulls, you'll feel like you’re in a movie... (we can't guarantee a record time, though).

If you're a running enthusiast seeking challenges in the district's capital, here are three events you can't miss. The Porto Marathon invites you to tackle the queen of distances through city streets and along the Douro’s banks, with a finish that almost makes you forget the pain. 42 km is a lot, but don’t worry, you can also take part in the Porto Half Marathon. If you want to combine competition with holiday magic, the São Silvestre Run, held in December, lets you sprint under Christmas lights (we can't promise you'll meet Santa though).

Nature lovers will be thrilled in the Douro Valley and the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Here, terraced vineyards and granite mountains create a breathtaking yet challenging landscape. With endless climbs and technical descents, you might rethink your choice of footwear. Here are three must-try events. The TransPeneda-Gerês takes you on rugged trails through unspoiled nature, among crystal rivers and spectacular viewpoints. For long distance fans, the Ultra Trail do Marão puts your legs to the test with tough climbs, but the effort is well rewarded with panoramic mountain views. Finally, if pure adventure is your thing, the Trail Noturno do Mineiro is the race for you (don’t forget your headlamp!).

After punishing your legs on trails or steep streets, it’s time for the real reward: gastronomy! A Francesinha, an ultra-gourmet take on a croque-monsieur with meat and cheese sauce, will restore your strength (and make you feel guilty before your next run). Don’t leave without tasting a glass of Porto at one of the city’s many wine cellars. For the more moderate, a Pastel de Nata with a good coffee will do just fine.

So, when are you coming to lace up your sneakers in Porto? Promise, between the effort and the reward, you won’t want to leave! 🔥🏃‍♂️
