« Ay, ay, ay, ay, canta y no llores » 🎶
The Mexican composer Quirino Mendoza y Cortés was right: when your legs are on fire and the fatigue sets in, keep smiling and push forward with joy 🌞. This is what you'll need to remind yourself if you decide to join the Maya Wildmarathon in Mexico. Running in paradise? Si, señor! 🇲🇽 Come December, head to Cozumel, the charming paradise island off Mexico's west coast. This isn't just a race; it's an experience enveloped in a postcard-worthy setting, featuring beach runs 🏝️ and jungle trails 🦧.
For this Maya edition, you can choose between three distances: 10 km, 21 km, or 42 km (bonus tan lines included) ☀️. The good news? The course is as flat as a tortilla 🫓, with only 30 meters of elevation gain total. We hope you're comfortable on all surfaces 💪, as the course is made up of 95% asphalted bike path, 3% beach and 2% dirt roads, to remind you that you’re in the Mexican jungle 🌱. No grueling hills, the steepest incline is a mere 5% 😎.
As for the conditions, December in Cozumel is like June in Europe, but without the rain ☔️ or clouds! ☁️ Expect temperatures between 19ºC and 26ºC. Be ready to finish in one piece, because in addition to the heat, you’ll be dealing with humidity 💦. If you overheat 🥵, there will be a clothing drop-off point on the route to lighten your load.
Running is great, but vacations are even better! 🌴
The Maya Wildmarathon is not just about running like crazy under the sun 🌅. It’s primarily a 5-day adventure in an all-inclusive package ✅. Ay, caramba! A 5-star hotel ⭐️, boat day 🛥️, snorkeling 🤿, exploring Mayan ruins 🛕, race route reconnaissance 🏃♂️, typical meals 🥘… Once you pay your registration fee, everything is covered. This means that when you’re not running, you’ll likely be enjoying a piña colada 🍹 (or several, no judgment here). Always drink responsibly of course, especially as race day approaches, to avoid veering off course 😂.
If five days isn’t enough (we understand), you can extend your aventura mexicana 🤠. We've got a fantastic program for you! Enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Cozumel 🐠, considered some of the most beautiful in the world according to explorer Jacques Cousteau 🇫🇷, among others. Various activities await: Mexican-style relaxation on Palancar beach ⛱️, visiting the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, a bike tour around the island 🚲, and perhaps attending a mariachi concert? 🪇 When it comes to food, you’re in for a treat. Even if you’re used to eating it at home, you’ve never tasted a taco 🌮 as good as in Mexico, and the same goes for guacamole 🥑. Brace yourself for some heat 🔥, we dare you to try the "Chili habanero en salsa", the spiciest dish in local cuisine. This dish features the habanero pepper, one of the hottest in the world, scoring between 100,000 and 350,000 units on the Scoville scale 😨. We’re out of that game, good luck... 🫣
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your best running shoes 👟, book your ticket ✈️, and prepare for a sunny and sporty adventure with the Maya Wildmarathon in Mexico! One thing’s for sure: between the running and the cocktails, it’s going to be caliente! 🥳
