Semi-Marathon de Budapest
Those familiar with Budapest undoubtedly hold fond memories of their visit to the capital of Hungary 🇭🇺, a city brimming with a rich blend of architecture and heritage of all sorts ✨. So, we reckon you'll be thrilled at the prospect of participating in the Budapest Half Marathon in September. This urban race takes you on a discovery journey through one of the most beautiful European capitals. After all, it’s not dubbed the "Pearl of the Danube" for nothing! 💍 Choose between two distances: a 10K and a half-marathon, either solo or as part of a relay team of 2 or 3 🤝.
Budapest was born in 1873 from the unification of Buda, the ancient capital 🌆, with Pest and Obuda 🔥. For a long time, the city has been an important political and economic center in Central Europe. A city highlight not to miss: the extraordinary historic swimming pools 🏊♀️, soon to be your fondest memory of urban baths... We highly recommend the sceneries along the Danube River, the Buda Castle district 🏰, and its metro (the world’s second oldest after London). All these elements make Budapest an extraordinary capital. Indeed, the metro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌍. Travelers are not mistaken: the city is very popular, with 4.3 million visitors annually...
Take the opportunity to explore more of the country! Neighboring Austria, with whom it shares a history (the renowned Austro-Hungarian Empire), it also boasts similar landscapes ⛰️. The Duna-Ipoly National Park, located north of Budapest, promises a breath of fresh air after your race 🏃♀️. The Lake Balaton, situated more centrally within the country, is Europe's largest lake. A trip there might just be the perfect way to stretch your legs and get ready for the famous Budapest Marathon... 😏
This is the beginning of a great adventure!
The adventure begins! The banks of the Danube , at the heart of Budapest , are set to witness a magnificent procession.
Before reaching the 3rd km, you'll have glimpsed the Citadel fortress , a symbol of the city , founded in 1848 😍. Your first refreshment point (out of a total of 6) is planned at the 4th km 🥤. By then, you’ll have already crossed 4 significant bridges over the river, near the Margaret Island , a verdant oasis in the city. The river, originating in Germany 🇩🇪, will be central to your race.
At the 10th km, you’ll finally cross it via the Árpád Bridge , leading you to the renowned island . 3 km later, after a hearty dose of fresh air in the forest , you’ll return to the banks for the final stretch of the race! 💪 Indeed, a long and final straight path awaits to take you to the finish line, located on the opposite shore. Thus, you will take one last bridge, opposite the Central Market Hall of Budapest , to reach the finish line 🏁.
Relay runners take to the same course as the individual half marathoners. The baton is passed at the 12th km mark on Margaret Island 🤝.
Runners in the relay race follow the same course as solo half-marathoners. You can hand off the baton wherever you choose, based on the division you've decided on 👍.
Let's go for an exceptional 10K along the banks of the Danube! 🏃♀️
Starting near the Egyetemisták Park and making a U-turn before the Rákóczi Bridge, you'll head back with the crowd towards the Citadel, the most iconic spot in the city. At the 5km mark, you'll cross the river over the spectacular Chain Bridge with its small triumphal arches 🏆. Then, it's a fast descent towards the finish line 🏁, along the Danube shores 🌊. You'll cross the river again near the Great Market Hall of Budapest, for the final two kilometers of the race. A favorite challenge among competitors... It's going to be fast! 🚀
