Have you never run abroad yet? It's time! Today the Finishers team takes you far, very far away! 🧐 Beyond the Black Sea and Georgia, south of Russia, lies Uzbekistan, a mythical country, formerly on the Silk Road between the Mediterranean and China 🌊. For French travelers, it remains a unique destination, so no need to mention it for runners 🏃🏼♀️. South of the country and of the very nice capital Tashkent, which you will likely visit upon arrival in the country, a beautiful race takes place every year in the city of Samarkand, a true world city 🌎. The city was classified in 2001 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and while not widely known here, it holds a remarkable aura in Central Asia ✨.
Three running courses of 10 km, 21 km, and 42 km are offered during the Samarkand Marathon, perhaps the most distant race you've ever run 🥳. The events, adapted for disabled athletes 🧑🦽, are held in the city where Alexander the Great once stayed 👑. Expect a high level on this marathon, both in sporting terms... or festive! 😏 You're not obliged to run in costume 🦸♀️ but for this race tradition is upheld 🎉 and many runners still bring color to this already colorful race with different cultures. Numerous concerts are planned during the event, which offers enticing night races 🌙. The idea of running at night in this historic city, under the minarets, has a certain charm, doesn't it?! 🕌 Like Napoleon, you might tell your sporty troops "Think that, from the top of these monuments, centuries of history are watching you" 👀. Assuming time allows, because it’s going to fly by on Uzbek asphalt 💨.
If some cities are considered crossroads, like Istanbul for example, Samarkand certainly is one of them. This city with a millenary heritage is considered by historians one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia 👨🦳. Its openness to the world has been such that Samarkand is a multicultural city, where numerous religions coexist. The Silk Road passed precisely through Samarkand, indicating how rich the city is in historical monuments 🗽. Remarkable sites like the Registan, a square surrounded by 3 madrassas covered with mosaics, dating from the 15th and 17th centuries.
Let's go for the tour! 😉
Starting from the Registan Square, you'll head towards the Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis 🕋. You'll then embark on a long, straight stretch of 12 km to the Silk Road Samarkand. You'll circle around it and retrace your steps... but crossing the finish line is not an option yet! 🏁 You'll set off for another round! It's going to be fast, very fast! 🚀
The course is the same as the marathon but in a single loop 🤓.
The route will be the same as the half marathon, but you won't go all the way to the Silk Road! You'll turn around in the middle of the long straight stretch 🤓.
