Marathon de la Rochelle
Ahoy, captain! Set your course to La Rochelle, in Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine)! 🤠 Every November, since 1991 (can you believe it’s already the 34th edition? 😏), it's time for the La Rochelle Marathon, offering courses that stretch between land and sea. This event takes you through a picturesque postcard setting at the famous Old Port, watched over by its three towers 🏰. If that's not a good excuse to set sail, what is? ⛵ So hold on tight, sailor, and prepare to dock at the gem of the West Coast, to participate in one of the most renowned marathons in France! 🇫🇷
Instead of picking a TV show, choose from the 6 races at the Marathon de La Rochelle Serge Vigot. Each distance is carefully selected so that everyone can enjoy the festivities 🎉 and the stunning landscape. You can opt for the Marathon, the event’s hallmark, on your own or in relay pairs 🤝. And if you want your entire team to join, the “Corporate Challenge” lets you cover the distance in a 4-person relay with colleagues. Pick your favorite stretch and get your friends to lace up… 👟 But act fast, as spots sell like hotcakes! You might not know this, but the Marathon de La Rochelle is the second largest in France by attendance! 🤯
But the organizers didn’t just plan for 42 km. There are courses for every type of runner. There’s the 10 km, ideal for those looking to beat their personal best 🚀. Beginners who just want to enjoy the breathtaking view of the seaside will also find this distance very accessible 🤗.
Are you a para-athlete eager to bring your wheelchair to the starting line? ♿ It’s possible, and you might even be joined by visually impaired runners, as they’re also competing! They will start the marathon 3 minutes before the other participants ⏱. So put on your glasses and grease your wheels, you have no excuse! 🏎
Lastly, let’s talk about the beloved race for the young finishers: the “Chauffe-Gambettes” 🦵. It’s 4 km long, and you can run alone or in a team. It’s a blend of sightseeing and good vibes, letting you explore the historic city center while soaking up the festival spirit of the race 🥳.
The festival atmosphere of the event is legendary with its bands, thousands of spectators, and the famous Pasta Party 🍝. And if culinary adventures are part of your journey, La Rochelle is famous for its fresh cuisine, with oysters 🦪, seafood, and Charentais melon. If you prefer to admire fish rather than eat them, the Aquarium of La Rochelle, one of the largest in Europe, awaits you to unveil the ocean’s secrets 🦑.
If all this hasn’t convinced you to participate, we don’t know what will… Oh, wait! We almost forgot to mention the best part: THE WORLD-CLASS SETTING. La Rochelle, a beautiful port city with 3 different ports, 3 magnificent towers from the Middle Ages, 3 islands peeking over the horizon… 🤯 You’ll discover the western coast of France like never before, along with the Atlantic Ocean! Why, you ask? Well, because of its exceptional mildness ⬇.
For that, you can thank Île de Ré, Île d’Oléron, and Île d’Aix 🏝 which form a natural barrier around the Pertuis d'Antioche. You won't have to worry about gusty winds and rain as you race across the beaches and the city’s waterfront. As you can tell, water is an integral part of this oceanic city 🌊, so much so that La Rochelle residents are committed to protecting it. The La Rochelle Bay is designated a Natura 2000 site due to its rich wildlife and plant life 😍. Don’t hesitate to try scuba diving to spot dolphins 🐬, seals, or turtles 🐢.
But then again, we suspect November’s chill might not make you eager to dive in 😂. For the rest of your stay in this former medieval city, we suggest visiting some of the many museums, parks, and exceptional monuments scattered throughout the city 🤩. You'll then understand why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and why it has inspired so many artists over time, from Dumas, to Balzac, and Maupassant 📖.
It's time to awaken your artistic, sporting, historical, and festive spirit 🥳. The Marathon de La Rochelle is a true classic! 😜
The La Rochelle Marathon is the must-attend event, whether you're a runner or a spectator! 👀 It draws over 6,500 participants each year thanks to its unparalleled appeal 🥰. But what makes it so desirable? 🤩 There are several reasons: its almost nonexistent elevation and course make it perfect for setting new records, the scenery shifts between wild seaside and historic city center 🌊, and the atmosphere is incredibly festive 🤯. You'll start from the city's Old Port and embark on the first 21 km loop ➰. You'll pass by the city's grand aquarium, one of the largest in Europe 🐡, run along the seaside, and head towards the Place de Verdun. You'll see the Porte Dauphine at the entrance of the Old Port and the two towers at the Esplanade St Jean d'Acre, along the ramparts. Then it's time for the second loop! 🔁
This race offers the same route and challenges as the original marathon 🚶♀️. However, there is one major difference: this race is run in pairs by two! 👯♂️ Each runner completes a portion of the course! So, lace up your running shoes and get ready to tell your partner that they're about to join you on this exciting challenge. See you at kilometer 21! 🤝
Blind and visually impaired individuals are also welcome to participate in the renowned marathon, starting 3 minutes ahead of other runners 💪.
