The event in a few words
Looking to take your first steps in the world of running? 🔥 The Corrida Das Fogueiras is the ideal event! 😎 Every last Saturday of June, in the Peniche peninsula, runners set off in the world's largest night race illuminated by bonfires! 🎆 Since 1980, the race kicks off at night 🌙, with the rhythm of flames and headlamps! 🔦 Get ready for the hottest night of the year 🥵, but don't worry, the organizers have got you covered with the seaside nearby 🌊. However, we suggest you stay on course and enjoy watching the Atlantic waves crashing against the cliffs 🪨. Right in the heart of one of the largest traditional fishing ports 🎣 in Portugal, in the district of Leiria, in Estremadura, you'll quickly realize this race is so festive and steeped in traditions of the town that it almost feels like a public holiday! 🤗 But on this festive day 🎉, there’s no rest for your legs: here's the menu you'll be served! 🍽️
15 km: it’s the one and only distance for the road race offered for dinner! 😋 Since the Corrida das Fogueiras aims to ignite excitement for everyone, a 5 km walk is suggested for those who might be cardio intolerant 😖. Even a children's menu of 500 m is on the list! 😍 So, the whole family's eyes will sparkle ✨ by the fires of the fogueiras (which means bonfires 🤓). But it’s not just the fires that will bring joy 😉. The race passes by Cape Carvoeiro, the western tip of Peniche! 🧭 And after burning off those kilometers 🤤, how about a sardine feast? 🐟 It's a must for all participants ☝️, the sardine festival in this fishing neighborhood by the ocean with friends is surely the best refueling you’ll experience! 😄 Because yes, a good celebration makes all the difference for your recovery 💪.
And speaking of recovery 🔋, after shining in your race ⚡, you should head over to one of Peniche’s secluded beaches! 🏖️ They are well-hidden and preserved from tourists, so finding a spot to lay your towel won’t be a problem 😂. Once your sun nap is over 🌞, it's time to grab a bite, so head to the fishermen's quarter! 🐡 There, you'll discover the best seafood restaurants in the region and enjoy fresh products 🧊. For a little post-meal walk, you can either visit the Peniche Fortress 🏰, which you’ll have passed during your race, or immerse yourself in nature in the Berlengas archipelago, the oldest nature reserve in Portugal! 🤩
So, are you ready to set the track on fire? 😎
