29ème Semi-Marathon et 10K d'Alicante
The month of February can be tough if you don't live in the mountains... It's cold, the days are short, and all you want is to feel the warmth and sunshine of spring! 🥹 That's exactly what the city of Alicante in the Southeast of Spain 🇪🇸, on the Costa Blanca, offers you in February: mild weather, beaches, and palm trees 🌴😎. As a die-hard running fan 🏃♀️, we've found an event by the seaside that will make you want to book your flight immediately: the Alicante Half Marathon and 10k (also known as the Meridiano International Half Marathon & 10k Aguas de Alicante)! 😜
Get ready to be amazed as soon as you arrive at the airport, where you'll be greeted by the stunning Santa Barbara Castle 🏛️, perched 166 meters above sea level 🌊 on Mount Benacantil ⛰️. To save your energy for the race, you can take the elevator to the top. Alternatively, you can hike up for a rather steep walk 😅 that offers breathtaking views of the city where the half marathon and 10k routes are laid out.
You will undoubtedly notice the large buildings from the 1970s, which are not the finest architectural achievements, but don't let them overshadow all the gems that Alicante has to offer. Notably, there are several remarkable museums (MUSA City Museum, MARQ Provincial Archaeological Museum, Museum of Belenes, MACA Museum of Contemporary Art, and the MUBAG Museum of Fine Arts) 🖼️.
To explore the area before pinning your race bib to your shirt (yes, you'll be running in shorts and a T-shirt in February 😎), take a stroll through the medieval quarter of Santa Cruz which is essentially the heart of Alicante 👍. You'll find charming narrow streets, quaint houses with whitewashed facades, colorful shutters, flower pots everywhere, and at the top, a picturesque 18th-century chapel... It's simply delightful! 🫶
Since you are in Spain, don't miss the small tapas restaurants and the local specialties: arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish broth and served with aioli 🤤), arroz a la Alicantina (Alicante-style paella), caldero (rice and fish), or arroz caldoso (soupy rice) are all excellent options to load up on carbs before the race! 🏃
One last recommendation: take a stroll along the Explanada de España, an iconic promenade in Alicante, and make sure to visit one of the beaches (San Juan, San Gabriel, La Calita... 🏝️) to work on your tan: you definitely want to come back with a bronzed look to impress your friends during the next training session and your colleagues around the coffee machine! 😂
